The subsidiary was founded as a joint venture between Bennelong Funds Management and BLSEM principal, Richard Fish. Richard has over 22 years of Australian equities market experience and is supported by portfolio manager Sam Shepherd and experienced analysts Sam Taylor and Michael Baker.

    Richard has extensive experience in financial markets with specialist Australian equities capabilities. He commenced working with the Bennelong Group in 2001, where he designed, implemented and managed their Long Short Equity Fund, now managing the fund on behalf of Bennelong and external investors.

    Prior to this, Richard worked in portfolio manager and dealer roles with National Asset Management Limited. His professional history encompasses positions with high profile investment banks including ANZ McCaughan Securities Limited, Bain Securities (Deutsche Bank AG) and MacNab Clarke & Partners (CS First Boston).

    Sam has worked with the Bennelong Group since 2006 in both an analyst and portfolio manager capacity. Currently, Sam is responsible for qualitative and quantitative research, thematic macro and industry research, and fund attribution and reporting.

    Previously, Sam was Partner at Ocean Financial Group where he was Equity Portfolio Manager for high net worth individuals. Sam's professional history also includes investment advisory roles at Hartleys Ltd and Intersuisse Ltd.

    Michael joined Bennelong Long Short Equity Management in February 2011 as an Analyst and focuses on analysing stocks and markets. Michael held similar investment analyst roles at MM&E Capital and Herschel Asset Management, where he was responsible for fundamental company valuations and investment recommendations.

    Michael has over 15 years of investment management experience gained through a variety of companies including Merrill Lynch Australia, Macquarie Bank, Nomura Securities in London and Credit Suisse First Boston Australia Equities. He holds a Bachelor of Business and Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment.

  • Sam Shepherd
    Senior Portfolio Manager

    Sam Shepherd joined the team in May 2012, bringing with him 20 years of Australian equities experience. Most recently, he was Head of the Melbourne institutional equities desk for Credit Suisse. In this role, he was responsible for research sales, account management and execution.  Prior to Credit Suisse, Sam was a sales trader and research salesman at JP Morgan.

    His first seven years in the industry were spent at Norwich Investment Management, where he worked as a dealer, analyst and portfolio manager. Sam has a Bachelor of Commerce and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment.
